Apparently, I look pretty good in my "old age"...

So this is what I got in the mail this week: Yup. It's a hearing aide to "try on for size". Umm... last I checked, my hearing was just fine. And this isn't the first "elderly" junk mail I have received. I finally had to call a certain retirement community that kept sending me brochures on a nearly monthly basis. Apparently there must be a quite-older Jennifer E. Southworth roaming around somewhere because that's who's mail I get! People, I am only 26. That's 2, 6. Not 126, 96 or even 76!! Can someone please remove me from this mailing list?! Thank you.

We're Off to See the Wizard!

The wonderful wizard of Oz!
Well, our cute little family is on our way to Portland. Sean and I get to see Wicked (for the second time!) and Ethan gets to play with his cousin Jackson. Afterwards we're going out with two of my cousins and their families for dinner... should be a fun day!
If you haven't visited our blog for a while, check out the last two posts and tell me what you think.

Sean's Convinced

So Sean is convinced that I should fill out the application and make an audtion video for the next season of...
"Don't take this the wrong way," he said, "but I think you would kick some serious butt if you were on that show!" This was about a month ago when I was watching an old episode and trying to catch up with the current season. And no, I was not eating any ice cream while sitting there watching it! It's true, I think I would have a decent shot on the show. I'm no stranger to working out and pushing myself (or having someone else push me) beyond what I think are my limits. But still. Me? On a reality show?! Naaah.

Fast forward to this week... Sean again tells me how well he thinks I would do on the show, though he has no desire to do it if it were a "couples" season! Next thing I know, he's online and checking out the application process. "You've still got time for season 8 if we hurry and get your application and video in!" he tells me. Seriously? You think I should do this? Yep. He's still convinced. Well now the idea is really rolling around in my head... Should I? Really?? Sean's reasoning: "What have you got to lose?" (no pun intended)

Hmm....

Maybe....

I don't know....

And yet, I went ahead and printed the application. What have I got to lose, right?

**3/27/09 Update: I talked with my friend Liv last night after her killer full-body strength & conditioning class (she's the hard-core Bob/Jillian-esque trainer) about doing the audition and she loved the idea. Her reaction was like she was getting a revelation... like "why didn't I think of this before?!" It was a great compliment when she said, "Oh Jenn, you'd do so well. You could win it all... you're so strong." Her confidence in me brought tears to my eyes! So she is also convinced that I should do it and said she would start praying for me! :) The only person who hasn't been so keen on the idea is my sister Lizzy. Her concern is how long I would be gone from my family (herself included). Believe me, I have already thought about this and it rips my heart out to even think of being away from my boys that long. I just love them so much!! But we'll just have to cross that bridge if/when we come to it. I know, though, that in the long run I would be a better mother for it. Ok, that's all for now! Thanks for all comments and encouragement already!

More Input, Please!

So... I have another dilema regarding Ethan's birthday party! If you'll recall, my first concern was with the party theme. I received more comments on that blog post than any other, so thanks for all of your input!! After much debate, I finally decided on the... FIRE TRUCK theme! This kid is so obsessed with fire trucks, it's not even funny. With living across the street from a fire station, we are quite accustomed to seeing and hearing the fire trucks and ambulances go by. Ethan's ears are so attuned to even just the diesel engine roar of the trucks that when he hears them he immediately stops what he's doing, says "Fire truck!" and runs to the front window to catch a glimpse. Have I mentioned before that he can correctly identify all 3 main emergency vehicles? Fire trucks, ambulances and police cars are all the rage at our house. Perhaps this means we have a future fire fighter or paramedic on our hands?!

Anyway, I digress. My new dilema is when to have the party. Let me explain... The whole idea around having the Fire Truck themed party was 1. Ethan's love for fire trucks and ambulances. and 2. The fact that we live right across the street from the fire station. When we first moved in, the actual fire station had basically been condemned (mold problems, I think). The vehicles were and still are in a large tent structure, with the crew living in portable housing units. The old station was demolished and now the brand, spanking new station is almost complete. It's a beautiful, 2-story, 3-garage building that they've been working on for at least 8 months. So what's the problem? I called the station tour coordinator a couple of weeks ago to set up a tour for Friday April 10th (when we plan on having his party) and even saying that if the new station isn't ready, we would still be happy to just meet the crew and see the trucks. Well, the fire chief won't allow it and says there would still be construction, making it too dangerous. But! Everything is scheduled to be done before April 18th and the crew's move-in date is April 20th.

Here's my question:
Do I...
a. Keep the party scheduled for April 10th and tour a different station, then just Sean, Ethan and I tour the new station later? I'm already taking a vacation day for the 10th.
b. Keep the party scheduled for April 10th and choose a different theme all together?
c. Post-pone the party for later in the month so we can keep the theme and tour the brand, spanking new fire station? Hopefully they'd let us do it on the 24th, put my contact person hasn't gotten back to me yet.

What does everyone think??

Tree Hugger

I have come to the conclusion that I have lived in Springfield and worked in Eugene (aka Hippie capital of the world) for far too long... I think I am now a tree-hugger. Not in the literal, arms-wrapped-around-a-tree or protesting on the street sense, but a tree-hugger just the same.

What I don't do:
1. Wear Birkenstocks.... I have never owned a pair.
2. Frequent the Saturday Market... I don't remember the last time I went.
3. Drive a hybrid... I'm quite happy with our SUV!
4. Put my hair in dreadlocks... stereotype, I know.
5. Buy organic or hemp clothing.

But still, the evidence is stacked against me.
1. I wear flip-flops nearly year-round. They never get "put away for the winter".
2. We have re-usable cloth grocery bags and I feel guilty if I forget them for those last-minute trips to the store.
3. I recycle like a crazy woman. Even when the cottage cheese or sour cream has long passed it's expiration date, I hold my nose, rinse out the container and recycle it anyway. Sean thinks I'm nuts for doing this and claims that in those cases it's "ok" to just throw it away. Um, yeah, he didn't grow up with my father... the origin of much of my recycling madness!
4. I take great pride in the recent Sanipac statistics showing how high above the national average Oregon and specifically Lane County is in recycling.
5. And finally, I am quite disturbed as I drive down Pioneer Parkway every morning on my way to work and see just how many of the trees they have cut down to make way for the new LTD bus route. I admit I was closer than I've ever been to wanting to join the protesters...
"Ride the bus... Kill a tree... Brought to you by LTD!" Kinda catchy, huh? But SO true! Pioneer Parkway used to be a beautiful, tree-lined street in Springfield. And not just with one, long, single row of trees, either. It's 2 one-way streets with a bike path down the middle and packed full of trees! And there were trees lining either side of the street as well. But alas, the new bus route is going right down the middle of Pioneer Parkway and thus the majority of those beautiful trees have already been chopped down to make way for the construction. :( I think I need a tissue (made only with recycled paper, of course)!

Missing: One Relaxing Weekend

Defining Characteristics to Look For:
* Sleeping-in on Saturday morning.
* Lazy, semi-unplanned Saturday, including but not limited to...
1. Still in jammies at 11am (or later if needed!).
2. A non-cold cereal breakfast, i.e. pancakes, french toast, waffles or even just bacon, eggs and toast. And orange juice... lots of orange juice. :)
3. Watching Saturday morning Disney channel cartoons while snuggling on the couch with a favorite little boy and his blankie. (A personal favorite!)
4. A clean house (because when my hubby and I are both home and working together, we can have the place sparkling in just a couple hours).
5. A fun family outing in the late afternoon/post favorite little boy's naptime.
6. An hour (or so) to myself at the gym followed by a Jamba Juice fruit smoothie.
* Date night. Please note, this may take place on either a Friday or Saturday night.
* Church on Sunday. And other than choir, no extra meetings!!
* Sunday afternoon late lunch/early dinner meal... preferably something yummy that's been simmering away in the crockpot all day.
* Sunday afternoon naps.

If found, please contact: Jennifer, via this blog.

Now... Here's a glimpse at what our weekend really looked like.
Saturday:
* Got to sleep in a little. Yay!
* Breakfast attempt - bacon, eggs and toast. Bacon looked a little questionable, toss that. Bread that Sean wanted was moldy, toss that. Settle for just eggs and orange juice. Sheesh... didn't we just go to the store?!
* 11am-2pm - Sean gone for career fair/service project with the youth.
* 2:30pm-6:30pm - I was gone for the YW tri-stake basketball tournament, which included 4 games, some overly-aggressive girls, a group of loud and obnoxious boys that got ticked that I kicked them off the stage (twice) to sit with the rest of the crowd, a couple of missing refs and some hard-core coaches. I'm pretty sure I even heard one of them swear at the ref! This is church ball people!
* 6:30-8:15pm - I'm still at the church to help decorate for the Stake dance that night (it was just 2 of us to set-up everything, blow up balloons and put up the decorations).
* 8:15-9:15pm - Hurry home (we're about 15 minutes away from the Stake center), change for the dance and pick up a couple slurpees for Shelley and I to sustain us through the dance.
* 9:15-11:30pm - Chaperon for the tri-stake dance, drink bright green punch (it was a Lucky Charm dance for St. Patty's day) and get tracked down by the same obnoxious boys from the basketball game so they can tell me (again) how uncool it was that I kicked them off the stage. Don't they have anything better to do? Get a life boys.
* 11:30pm-12am - Make a grocery store run for milk, bananas and bread. Still bitter about the questionable bacon from the morning and pick up a fresh package along with some Dr. Pepper after it was requested by a phone call from Sean and Stefan (one of the YM in our ward who was over watching a movie).
* 12:10am - Realize the gas tank is on "E" and stop to put $20 in for now. As far as I'm concerned, it's still Saturday night.
*12:20am - Finally HOME!!

Sunday:
* Ethan up at 8:45am... normally this would've been sleeping in, but I was still so exhausted that my eyes were doing that burning thing where it hurts to even have them open.
* Breakfast - Don't even attempt to make anything, even though we have the fresh bacon. Settle for cold cereal and call it good.
* 10:30am - Sean leaves for a YM presidency meeting. Meanwhile, I'm still so tired that I allow Ethan to watch 3 shows on playhouse Disney.
* 11:30am - Sean still gone and now practicing with the rest of the quartet that is singing in sacrament meeting.
* 12:15pm - Sean has choir practice.
* 1pm - Ethan and I actually get to church on time and meet up with Sean. We actually had a pretty good sacrament meeting this week, I mean as far as dealing with a squirmy toddler goes!! I purposely denied Ethan's snack request while we were getting ready for church so he would be hungry during sacrament meeting. Cruel mom, I know, but he sits still while he's eating! My new mom trick: I made Ethan a little snack mix with goldfish crackers, chex cereal, fruit snacks, a few marshmallows and raisins. He loved it! I think all the variety helped because usually we'll pack just goldfish crackers or just a fruit snack and I was happy to see that he didn't just pick out all the marshmallows first!
* 2:15pm - Take Ethan to Nursery (which he loves) and it was nice to see him go straight for the toy trucks and make himself at home. Of the 5 kids in there, only he and one other girl weren't crying.
* 4:30pm - Get home from church and crash! Change into comfy clothes and Ethan goes right down for a nap, no complaining. Sean and I enjoy some of his spicy, cheesy bean dip (complete with the "top secret" ingredient) while reading the paper. Later, we move to the couch to snuggle and share some Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia, right out of the carton!

The rest of our evening was pretty uneventful... But still, I think I need a weekend to recover from this last weekend.
And remember, if you can capture my missing relaxing weekend, please return unharmed. Thank you.

February Recap

Wow! And I thought last month was fairly uneventful. I'm racking my brain for what we've done this past month that could be considered blog-worthy... This may take a while... We've been busy, as always, but just with the same ol', same ol' other than the addition of my (almost) daily workouts to our already-crammed scheduled. I'm going on 7 weeks straight! I missed Monday and Tuesday due to a nasty sinus headache/cold, but I was right back at it Wednesday and Thursday with a kickboxing class and then a killer strength & conditioning class (we did full body circuit training... thanks, Liv)! I think my jeans are getting looser, but I can never tell until they're literally falling down.

Sooo... here's what I can come up with that I haven't already blogged about.

*Stk. YW Basketball season: I'm in charge and this is hardly blog-worthy other than it taking up some of my Saturday afternoons. Why is it not blog-worthy? Well, it's not that I don't want it to be, but we have had almost ZERO participation. Only one ward has shown up every week, with the exception of a couple girls from my ward that showed up once. I hate to say it, but it's been a pretty pathetic season as far as turn-out goes.

*Portland trip for Baron's blessing on Feb. 1st: It was great to see John, Steph and their boys again. Steph was nice enough to snag me a chance to hold Baron for a few minutes... a difficult task to do when both grandmothers are there (one from southern CA and one from southern OR). We also enjoyed spending some time with all of the Grahams and Steph's parents and little brother. I was impressed by how well Jackson and Ethan played together despite both of them desperately needing a nap and running on fumes. To give you an idea of how tired Ethan was, he was out cold within a few blocks of driving for home!

*My family went to Mexico!! Sooo jealous. The beach. Warm sun. Senor Frogs. [[Sigh...]] My great-aunt Ruthie has a time-share and has invited my family to go the last couple years... we're too poor, but my parents and Lizzy got to go. They brought us back some t-shirts and vanilla (the only vanilla I'll use when baking if I can help it) and Lizzy got me a cute keychain and fish-shaped ceramic box for our tropical-themed bathroom. She also got her hair braided. Here she is with the braids (and sunburn):

And after they were taken out:

*I fulfilled my sacrament meeting talk obligation. I should be off the radar now for at least a year, right?! I spoke on Unity (within your marriage, the home and the church) - it was well received.

*Sean and I squeezed in a date night the last Friday of the month. We went to go see Bride Wars. We thought it was pretty funny and good if you're looking for a light comedy. We're hoping to see Valkyrie next. Afterwards we shared some yummy desserts at Applebee's. My parents showed up not long after we got there, so we actually switched tables to chat with them for a while.

What we're looking forward to in March...
*My hair appointment (last) Saturday!! Ok, I may be the only one in the family who was actually looking forward to it.
*Sean off for a full week for Spring Break! Don't accountants get spring break off too?!
*We get to go see WICKED!!! If you've never heard of it, click on the title... it's one of the best musicals ever. We saw it three years ago and absolutely loved it. Of course, we had already memorized the soundtrack before the show because the music is that good. Ok, you can be jealous now! ;)

Best Welcome Home

Our weekends the past month have been packed! Sean with YM basketball Saturday mornings, me with YW basketball Saturday afternoons, church, choir, meetings, etc. Yesterday Sean had choir in the morning, then we all met up for church, then he had a scout meeting afterwards, we had the missionaries over for dinner and finally I had a stake youth standards night to go to in the evening. I finally got home for the day just before 9pm. I walked in the door and Ethan was down the hall in his room, so he hadn't heard me come in. Sean called for him and got no response. He called for him again. Nothing. Finally it was quiet for a second, so I turned the deadbolt. The click from it locking into place did the trick. Ethan actually heard that and came running down the hall yelling, "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" around the corner, straight to me and threw his arms around my legs to give me a big hug! I loved it! And I love my sweet little boy... who was a terror in sacrament meeting... he must've known he needed to get back on mom's good graces! It was good to be home. :)

Ethan Counting

Ethan is learning new words and expanding his vocabulary every day. It amazes me. It also makes me think twice before saying, "Oh, crap!" No need for our little parrot to pick up that choice phrase. :) So recently we have been working on numbers, abc's, colors and shapes. He can identify a handful of colors, especially on cars or trucks. "Blue truck." "Grey car." "Green van." and can repeat the alphabet one letter at a time (we haven't tried anything more than that). And just this last week he has been counting on his own. It's very exciting. I've heard him count 1 to 5 on his own and 7 to 10, but he hasn't quite put it all together. He can, however, count to 13 when someone starts him at 1... he'll do every other number for you and that's what I managed to get on video.

Of course, lately he's been refusing to do his new trick when I ask if he wants to "count with mommy?" He flat-out tells me "no" and continues pointing out various vehicles as we drive down the road... we usually practice numbers and letters on our daily commutes between home and grandma's house. So... enjoy this short little video. Apparently I should be happy I got it while I could!

Laundry Helper

The other day, after Ethan and I got home for the evening and were getting dinner started I looked around the kitchen and didn't see him. Our kitchen sorta dead-ends, so there's only one path in and out and I was sure I hadn't seen him walk past me. Then I heard the giggles and this is what I found:Apparently the dryer door was not shut all the way, so he had decided that was the perfect place to climb into.He was quite pleased with himself.
I got a kick out of it too! Silly kid!! :)
