ODE, OSB... WHY?

ODE: Oregon Dept. of Education
OSB: Oregon School for the Blind

Why?? Why ODE must you shut down OSB, forcing all of its blind students back to the public school system that is not capable of attending to their needs (most of them are not "just blind") and also putting my husband and the rest of the staff out of a job? Hmmm....??

Well, nothing is official yet, but it sounds like they will be closing the Oregon School for the Blind as of September 1st. This email from Ed Dennis, Deputy Superintendent for ODE doesn't help:

"In addition, we will also be losing valuable staff positions at the special schools. The co-chairs assumed the closure of the Oregon School for the Blind. We will be working to assure a safe and smooth transition for the students at OSB. We will also be working with our partners in the human resource and employment fields to give our valued staff at OSB every opportunity to transition well."

Boy, does this put a twist on our idea to move to Salem in the fall(ish)! This has really been a hurtle as we've tried to make plans for the next year or so. Every decision seemed to be pending on whether or not they were going to keep the school open. It's actually a bit of a relief to finally know that it is almost a for-sure thing. Now we know Sean needs to be looking for another job, look into collecting unemployment during the summer, etc., etc. We've talked it over and would still like to move to the Salem area to be closer to State job opportunities (the benefits are really good plus Sean can continue to have tenure with the State). Our goal is still to switch me from full-time accounting worker bee to stay-at-home mom. And we're hoping to stick with our original plan and get a gig managing apartments. Soooo... if anyone has connections PLEASE let us know!

At this point, we're not too worried despite the horrible economy. Both Sean and I have had pretty strong feelings that everything will work out... we just need to continue to put our faith and trust in the Lord. Actually, for as much as I generally worry, stress, fret and overall give myself anxiety over the future and financial stability, I have been relatively calm and fairly comforted over the past months. Sean knows more about what's going on so he's probably had more restless nights than me.

I think that's about it. Again, please feel free to pass along any info you may have regarding managing apartments or job opportunities. :)
Dang this economy!

That sucks!!! You seem to have a good attitude, so I am sure it will all work out!! You guys should move here and be dancers. I think Seam would be great at it!

Shoot, I wish I had some ideas for you. You'll find them on your own. I know what you mean about the "relief" but it still sucks. Sorry. Good luck figuring it all out! I had no idea he worked at a school like that. That is really cool. It's really sad for the kids, that they won't have that resource anymore. What a thing to lose. I'm glad you're not stressing.

That is rough. I hope that everything goes well for you. My brother is job hunting now, as well. I don't have any good ideas. I know that the Eugene Police Department is hiring, and the city is also hiring 911 dispatchers. I don't think that Sean is looking for that kind of work, but those are the only jobs open that I know about. Good luck, and keep a good attitude!

Yucky and no fun! No fair and totally lame! I'm sorry you have to go through all this. Good job being so optimistic. You guys are both amazing, and I know everything will pan out!

As for apartment managing...let me know when you're looking to start working, and i can find out if there will be something available in Salem around then with Norris and Stevens, and hopefully get you an interview. I know you would do an awesome job. Keep me posted....for sure!
